My new party album Kantos is out now!

My new party album Kantos is out now!

Hey Friends!

My new album “Kantos” its officially out today!

At a time when so many people had begun to panic about AI and what it might mean for our future, I started working on this record as a way to explore the concept of grounding ourselves in our humanity. The album title is a nod to Hyperion Cantos and to Immanuel Kant, but it also refers to ‘canto’ meaning ‘I sing’ in Spanish. The idea is that even with so much technological advancement, songs are still something we very much rely on to connect with other people. There’s a great deal of value in human innovation: if we don’t value our humanity, what are we valuing at all?

Watch the amazing music video for Lilliputian Chop by @tonarianimation that just premiered on Crunchyroll! (I animated the music notes and @iheartjlp made the typography 😉).

Being immersed in the whole dance-punk scene in New York in the 2000s was very formative for me, and a lot of this record was heavily influenced by bands like The Rapture and LCD Soundsystem. During the pandemic I got a Fender Strat and got really excited about the tone. It reminded me of the stuff Nile Rodgers was making with Chic in the ’70s, and I made a conscious decision to build the demos around the guitar and all these cool drums loops I was playing around with. When it came time to record Kantos, I headed to Chase Park Transduction (a studio in my former home of Athens, Georgia) and joined forces with my long time collaborator, engineer Drew Vandenberg (Faye Webster of Montreal, Toro y Moi), and a group of British musicians, Sweet Loretta, that I met on tour in Europe in summer 2023 (who are touring with me this fall!). The structure of the songs didn’t really change from the demo version, but the feel of everything completely transformed. It was definitely an affirmation of how working with live musicians can add a real element of purpose to the track.

If there’s anything I want people to come away with when they hear this record, it’s a feeling of excitement about the possibilities of human-created art. Even as we’re learning more about all the amazing things AI can do, I think humans will always be one step ahead in terms of our creativity and innovation. There’s still no limit to what we have to offer.

At it’s core, Kantos is a party album about the possible end of humanity as we know it, at turns deeply unsettling and sublimely joyful. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do, and I can’t wait to see you on tour!

New single "Make Believe" out now ✨

New single "Make Believe" out now ✨

My new single “Make Believe” featuring the amazing Linqua Franqa is out now! This song started as a beat that reminded me of that proto-funk-rap from the early ‘80s. The only way the verse vocals sounded appropriate was if there was that kind of rapping, so I gave it a go! Listen now on all platforms

My new single "Icarus IV" is out now!

My new single "Icarus IV" is out now!

Hey everybody! I made this video for my new single, Icarus IV.

I decided to take a spin on the classic tale of Icarus, and I set my song to a 16-bit fantastical psycho-Greek animal world where it follows the return of the prodigal son, Icarus (Red Panda!) as he confronts his irate abandoned band mates.

While I can neither confirm nor deny that this story is autobiographical, you might relate if you’ve ever felt guilty having left or if you’ve ever felt left behind.

I directed it and enlisted some very talented pixel artists, @kalengo_pixelart and A Lonely Spirit. @iheartjlp did all the amazing logos. I did most of the rest. I hope you enjoy it! Link above ☝🏻

My new album "Music from the Song Film: Omoiyari" is out now!

My new album "Music from the Song Film: Omoiyari" is out now!

Hey friends,

My new soundtrack album “Music from the Song Film: Omoiyari” is out today on all online platforms and CD & Vinyl! My first double LP, this contains proto orchestral versions of many Omoiyari album songs, as well a beautiful symphonic score I recorded with Nu Deco Ensemble.

The Omoiyari project helped me open up as a musician, because we were able to connect and share music with survivors and people who experienced that history firsthand. And I realized that just playing a little violin for someone can brighten their day, and that the venue or performance situation doesn’t need to be perfect.

My goal as a musician is to entertain and bring joy to people’s lives, and I became less precious with my music and learned to share more, and now I do that all the time. It was a true communion; the people told us their stories and we exchanged our enthusiasm and some music. My hope is that when people hear this album they’ll be able to see the wide soundscapes that exist in my mind, and join me on a deeper dive into my full artistic palette. It’s a way for people to accompany me on this journey, from how I came up with the music to discovering the truths behind a very complicated part of our history.

I always wanted a symphonic underscore for this film, and I did my best to incorporate a lot of the songs’ melodies into it so you can hear them throughout. It’s a unified vision. And the idea was that as the composer, subject, and co-director I would have this unique power to shape it in a way that satisfied me. My co-director, Justin Taylor Smith, and I were so aligned, coming from our previous work together on several snowboarding films, and that partnership was also unique because of our trust for each other. As a co-director, he had zero notes for me while creating the score, which is very rare. Most film composers don’t have that luxury.

I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed creating it, and please enjoy the music video for "Red, White, & Blue" if you haven't watched it already!

New single 'For Every Voice That Never Sang' out now!

New single 'For Every Voice That Never Sang' out now!

I wrote this for the NPR song project and I called it “For Every Voice That Never Sang”.

“It's about being on the outside of society, but also being on the outside of love. When you're pining for somebody's attention, it's just as painful as trying to become accepted in your community. And, I think, this song is a way to encourage people to keep your chin up, because the world is changing."

Romantic cellos by Emily Hope Price and inspired woodblock art by Asa Nakata.

In conjunction with the release of String Quartet Live!, Kishi Bashi is launching a special contest for student orchestras around the country. He's made the sheet music for all nine tracks on String Quartet Live! available for download via Bandcamp, and orchestras from anywhere in the country are encouraged to learn two songs of their choosing (international schools are welcome to submit for future consideration but unfortunately cannot be considered at this time). Orchestras should submit two songs, 1 slow and 1 fast (adding their own interpretations if they'd like) and submit a video of their group performing each by uploading it to YouTube with the hashtag #KishiSpringFling. Here's what we need from you:

-Go to Bandcamp, and download the new String Quartet Live! album which will give you access to the sheet music (listed as "bonus material")

-Send a brief blurb (video or email) about yourself, and school to kishibashispringfling@gmail.com: Who are you? Why are you excited to perform this music? Why do you want Kishi Bashi to come to your school?

-Record (iPhone video is fine) the 2 songs, upload to YouTube, and use the hashtag #KishiSpringFling
